Sustainable Public Procurement

About

This course is designed to equip public procurement professionals in the UK with the knowledge and tools to embed sustainability systematically across the procurement lifecycle. It offers a structured and practice-oriented introduction to how procurement can serve as a lever for delivering social, environmental, and economic outcomes, beyond the traditional focus on cost efficiency. Grounded in current legislation, including the Procurement Act 2023, the Public Services (Social Value) Act, the Modern Slavery Act, and the Circular Economy Strategy, the course supports participants in identifying sustainability risks and opportunities, planning and managing contracts with outcome-oriented intent, and engaging suppliers in a more strategic and accountable manner. Participants will be guided through a seven-step sustainable procurement framework tailored to public sector contexts. The course provides clear instruction on defining need, designing specifications, evaluating bids, and managing contract delivery in alignment with broader public value goals. Strategic supplier relationships and readiness for future regulatory developments are integrated throughout the learning journey. This is not a technical course focused on emissions data or carbon accounting systems. Rather, it is intended as a practical and reflective guide for public professionals committed to aligning procurement practice with principles of fairness, inclusion, transparency, and long-term social and environmental resilience. Participants who complete the course and achieve a score of 80% or higher across all quizzes will receive a certificate of completion. This can be used as evidence of professional development or commitment to sustainable procurement. The course is self-paced and takes approximately 2 hours to complete, including reading, reflective exercises, and quizzes.
